Ecosystems of the Mind - Part I & Part II with Instructor John Bucher

From the master storyteller John Bucher comes a paradigm disruptor. Work-life balance is a metaphor borne in a different century. The profound and rapid changes characterized by globalization, organizational reorganization, increasingly sophisticated technology, the 24/7 workplace and the experience of the fast pace of change results in more demanding intensified working practices and environments that engenders feelings of the pressure, lack of time and general busyness. The metaphor of work-life balance has outlived its usefulness because the version of reality it promotes engenders quick fix solutions that leave clients feeling guilty, empty and unmotivated. Today’s work environment is far more complex with underpinnings of work-personal life problems untouched by the outScheduled metaphor (Gambles et al, 2006; Smithson and Stockoe, 2005). Ecosystems of the Mind answers the call for a wider and more comprehensive metaphor that opens up client’s creativity with new visions of alternative futures and solution making that doesn’t promote the shame and guilt associated with not getting the balance just right.

• Set a context for powerful conversations that facilitate client’s ability to move between the big picture of where the client is heading and where to client wishes to go.

• Promote client’s self-discipline without proving resistance using storytelling.

• Develop a specific plan with related time frames and intended priorities.

Develop client’s ability to make decisions, address key concerns and the ability to reflect on and learn from experiences.
